They Remembered the Menu......But Forgot the Chains.

Every Sunday, I hand out a section of Scriptures for everyone to read and reflect on throughout the week. It gives us time to sit with the passage instead of just rushing past it. We notice patterns, ask questions, and really see what the Lord might be showing us in the selected scriptures.

The theme for this month is "Wilderness and Waiting". You know, those seasons in life where things feel slow, uncomfortable, uncertain, or even frustrating? But the wilderness in Scripture is RARELY wasted space. More often than not, it's the place where God does some of His deepest work in people.

This week’s reading is Numbers chapters 11 through 14.

The people begin to complain. They grow tired of the manna that God has been faithfully providing and they start craving the foods they remember from Egypt. Almost like their memory becomes selective. They remember the fish, cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic… but they forget the slavery they were delivered from.  They remember the menu.....but forget about the chains.

Would it be appropriate here to say that complaining has the ability to rewrite history in our minds?  I mean, c'mon.... it convinced them that the place they had left really wasn't that bad.....and where God was bringing them wasn't really that good.

The constant complaining weighs heavily on Moses.  UNDERSTANDABLY.  The responsibility of leading these people became overwhelming, and he finally cries out to God because he feels like he can’t carry the burden alone anymore. So....God appoints seventy elders to help share the burden of leadership. But....the people’s craving continues to grow, and they demand meat. God sends quail into the camp in abundance.... but what they insisted on receiving ultimately brings consequences.

As if the crowd of complaining people wasn't enough.... Moses’ own family (Miriam and Aaron) begin speaking against him! They start criticizing his marriage and it turns into a challenge to his authority and calling. So....God steps in and settles the matter Himself. Miriam is struck with leprosy and instead of defending himself or holding resentment, Moses immediately intercedes and asks God to heal her!

Soo, later on, we read that twelve spies are sent into the Promised Land
All twelve see the same land,
the same cities,
the same fruit,
and the same giants.
But they return with TWO completely different stories.

Ten spies focus on the obstacles.
The people are strong.
The cities are fortified.
The giants are intimidating.
Their report fills the camp with fear!

Joshua and Caleb respond differently.
They urge the people to trust God and move forward in faith.

But, the fear is too much for the people and they begin crying, complaining, and even entertaining the idea about choosing a new leader and going back to Egypt! Fear replaces faith, and the generation that refused to trust God loses the opportunity to enter the land they had been walking toward.

When you read these chapters together, it's easr to see that...

unbelief has consequences.

Their complaining led to craving.
Craving led to dissatisfaction.
Dissatisfaction led to rebellion.
Rebellion led to fear.

And fear....well, it eventually cost them the very promise they had been walking toward.

But if you look closer, you'll also see that

God STILL remained faithful.

He provided leaders when Moses was overwhelmed.
He defended Moses when others questioned him.
He continued guiding Israel even after His anger and their failure.

The wilderness reveals BOTH sides of the story!

The frailty of people…and the patience of God.

And honestly, that’s probably why these chapters still hit so close to home this week.

Because if we’re being honest, most of us have had moments where we looked at the giants in front of us and thought, there is absolutely no way.

And yet the voice of God is still saying the same thing that Joshua and Caleb believed......

“The land is before you. Trust Me.”

**Do you want to join in on our Reflections?  I apologize, as I could've brought this up when I started it back in January.  But it's not too late to start now!

Next week's focus is about LONGING FOR GOD
Psalm 27
Psalm 42
Psalm 63
What emotions stood out in these prayers?
