You know how sometimes it’s not the big things that trip us up...but the little ones that we let slide? That’s exactly the vibe Proverbs 6 gives me! Solomon goes through this rapid-fire list of warnings - don’t get trapped by careless promises, don’t be lazy, don’t get cozy with wickedness.....and then he lands on this:
These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him…(v16)
Doesn't it fee like he’s saying, “Listen! these aren’t small matters. They destroy lives, families, and communities.”
Haughty eyes, lying tongues, sowing division, those are NOT just ugly behaviors. They are deadly poison to relationships!
- Hebrew Word Study- Abomination (תוֹעֵבָה – toʿevah)
The word “abomination” in verse 16 means something deeply detestable, offensive, or repulsive to God. This isn’t just “oh, I don’t like that.” It’s moral nausea. It’s God saying, I want nothing to do with that!
Some of the things God calls abominations are things people treat lightly, like lying, stirring up drama, and pride. But to God, they’re not harmless quirks....they’re things that break trust, kill unity, and corrode love!
Just think about it for a minute, how many families, churches, or friendships have been torn apart not by adultery or theft, but by gossip, arrogance, or stirring up strife? It’s often the “smaller” sins that sneak in and do the deepest damage, isn't it?
That’s why Proverbs 6 feels so urgent! It's like he's standing on the porch waving his arms, saying, “Don’t play with fire here. Even the sparks can burn down a house.”
Think on this though....if God hates division, He delights in unity. If He hates lies, He treasures truth. If He hates pride, He smiles on humility. That means every small choice to walk in truth, peace, and love is actually something God loves!
- Write with me -
Are there “little foxes” in your life? Like....things you’ve been excusing but that might actually be eating away at your peace or relationships?
How does it change your perspective to realize that pride, lies, or gossip are not just “bad habits” but things that God says He hates?
What is one small, intentional way you can sow peace and truth this week?
- Pray With Me -
My sweet Jesus,
Help me take seriously the things You take seriously. Open my eyes to the things that I’ve just been brushing off, and give me the courage to deal with them before they deal with me. Teach me to love what You love and hate what You hate. Let my words bring peace, not division, and my heart walk in humility before You.
In your mighty name, Amen
