These Chairs Are Expectations
And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. - Luke 14:23
When
we look around, it’s easy to notice the empty chairs. We see the spaces where
someone could be sitting, and sometimes it feels a little discouraging, doesn’t
it? But……what
if we stopped seeing those chairs as empty spaces and began seeing them as
places of expectation?
A chair
waiting to be filled represents someone God is still reaching for. It might be a
person who’s never stepped inside a church before. It might be the one who
walked away years ago and doesn’t know how to come back. It might be someone
hurting, confused, lonely, addicted, ashamed, or convinced they have gone too
far for God to reach them.
Those
chairs aren’t empty. They’re holding space for the lost, the wounded, the
searching, the ones God is still drawing. Those chairs are expectations!
Faith
has a way of looking at what’s not there yet and recognizing what could be.
Hebrews
11:1 says “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of
things not seen.”
We
may not see them sitting here yet, but we KNOW that God is working!
He’s
softening a heart right now. He’s arranging a conversation. He’s placing a
burden on someone to invite them. He’s using a circumstance that will cause
them to begin searching for Him. His work is already in motion, even where we
cannot yet see it.
So
instead of allowing the empty chairs to speak discouragement, let’s allow them
to awaken prayer.
Let
every open seat remind us that there is someone God loves who hasn’t arrived
yet.
Someone
needs to hear that Jesus still saves. Someone needs to know that their life is
not beyond repair. Someone needs to discover that there’s a church ready to
love them, pray for them, and walk beside them while God begins healing their
heart.
These
chairs aren’t empty. They’re waiting.
They’re
waiting for prodigals to come home. They’re waiting for families to be
restored. They’re waiting for people we know, and people we’ve never met, to
walk through those doors and encounter the presence of God.
So tonight, let’s begin to see
this sanctuary differently. When you look across these chairs, I don’t want us
to see absence, I want us to see expectation. Let every open space stir faith
and remind us that God’s already working and reaching for hearts that we haven’t
seen walk through these doors yet.
There’s still room for the
lost, the wounded, the hungry, and the searching. And we can pray with
confidence that God is sending them. Let that expectation move us into worship!
Let’s praise Him for the work
already in motion. Let’s worship for every heart He’s drawing, every life He’s
restoring, and every chair that will soon hold a testimony of His grace.
