Proverbs 7 - Wisdom As Your Sister
Honestly, it’s a little eerie how familiar it feels, even in our world today. She is a picture of temptation in general. It always comes dressed up, making promises it can’t keep, and it always says, “Pssst....no one will find out.”
But Solomon isn’t just warning against one woman...he’s teaching us how to guard our hearts long before temptation ever knocks.
My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee. Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye. Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart. Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman. (v1–4)
The phrase “apple of thine eye” uses the Hebrew word ishon, which literally means “little man.” They say it’s the tiny reflection you see of yourself in someone’s pupil when you’re standing close.
Isn’t that beautiful!?
It’s about living so near to God’s wisdom that it shapes your perspective before anything else does.
And I love how Solomon words it: “Say to wisdom, you are my sister.” In other words - make wisdom your closest friend. You don’t keep your sister at a distance. You share life with her. You lean on her. You love her. That’s how God’s Word should be in our daily life - close, trusted, familiar, and always within reach.
When you think about temptation, what bright flashing neon signs usually get your attention? How can wisdom protect you in those moments?
What would it look like in your life to treat God’s Word like a trusted sister or best friend - someone you turn to first?
How does the picture of “apple of your eye” challenge you to keep God’s wisdom closer than you have before?
- Pray With Me -
Lord,
Thank You for giving me Your Word as both wisdom and protection. Help me to hold it as close so that everything I see is filtered through it. Keep me from falling for the lies of temptation that look sweet but end in sorrow. Teach me to love wisdom like a sister, to keep it close, and to walk with it daily. In Jesus' name, Amen.
