Proverbs 3 - A Life Anchored in God’s Wisdom
Proverbs 3 is a chapter many of us know in pieces. We’ve memorized a verse here, quoted a promise there. But.....when you step back and read it as a whole, it paints a picture of what a life fully anchored in God’s wisdom looks like.
Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart. (v3)
Imagine mercy and truth like an article of clothing that you never take off - visible to others and always with you. And then imagine them etched permanently inside your heart. That’s the picture Solomon paints. In a world that often trades mercy for convenience and truth for comfort, God calls us to be marked by both.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (v6)
The word acknowledge here is the Hebrew word yada (יָדַע), which doesn’t mean just giving God a good ol' head nod. It means to know Him intimately, to recognize Him personally, to involve Him deeply.

It’s not about fitting God into your ways - it’s about inviting Him to define them.
The word direct is yashar (יָשַׁר) - to make straight, level, or right. Think of a crooked, rocky road being cleared and smoothed so you can walk securely.
God doesn’t just point you in a direction - He actively shapes the path under your feet as you walk with Him.
Later in verses 24 and 25, Solomon writes words that I have often called upon throughout my life.
When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet. Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.
Sleep is a fragile thing in our restless age. Fear, uncertainty, and anxiety at every turn have a way of stealing our peace. But God promises His children a kind of rest the world can’t offer. Sweet sleep isn’t just about a body that’s tired enough - it’s about a soul that trusts enough.

Even when sudden fear rattles the world, God keeps His own in perfect peace.
Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways. For the froward is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous. (v31-32)
The word oppressor here is ashaq (עָשַׁק) - someone who defrauds, crushes, or takes advantage of others for gain. Our world glorifies people like this! We see them on magazine covers, on stages, running companies, and sometimes.....even in the church. They rise by stepping on others, and for those who see only with their eyes, it appears to be success. God warns us: don’t envy them, don’t imitate them. Their way is detestable to Him. The Lord’s secret, His intimate counsel, His friendship....is reserved for the righteous.
Better to walk humbly with less and be in fellowship with God than to climb high by oppression and find yourself far from Him.
Keep His Word close.
Trust Him with everything.
Embrace His correction.
Find rest in His protection.
Walk uprightly, even when the world around you celebrates those who don’t.

Did other scriptures stick out to you more than others? What do they say to you?
This is the way of life that doesn’t just survive in a chaotic world - it thrives.
Did other scriptures stick out to you more than others? What do they say to you?
Where in my life am I tempted to rely on my own wisdom instead of inviting God to intimately guide my steps?
What keeps me from experiencing the “sweet sleep” God has to offer? What would it look like to release that fear into God’s hands?
Am I tempted to admire the success of “oppressors” - those who rise at the expense of others? How can I guard my heart?
How can I bind mercy and truth around my neck and write them on my heart in real ways every day?
- Pray With Me -
Jesus, help me to hold tightly to your mercy and truth.....not only in my words but in my heart. Teach me to acknowledge You in every part of my life and to invite and trust You to straighten my path. Lord , calm my fears at night and give me the sweet sleep that comes only from resting in You. Guard me from the ways of the oppressor, and draw me deeper into Your secret counsel, where true life and peace are found. In Jesus’ name, amen.
