Repurposing

Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.  Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?  I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.                    - Isaiah 43:18-19  Whew!  It's been a journey!  While I am glad to be this far into it, I am saddened that not everything that the Lord has done was documented.  HOWEVER, I will share as He brings it to my remembrance.    I will be using this to post my studies that I share twice a month in church and also to share my personal studies as they arise and the Lord leads me to share them.   The grief and healing journey I have been on since my son passed from suicide is more of an in-person ministry right now as it is a raw and sensitive situation.  I am very protective over my son and his sisters and have an obligation to protect their privacy. Proverbs 2 - Incline and Apply

I'm sure we could all agree that there’s a difference between simply knowing about something and actually going after it with your whole heart, right?

Proverbs 2 paints wisdom like buried treasure...something worth digging for, searching after, and holding onto once you’ve found it.

My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; so that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding… (v 1-2)

There are two powerful words here (notice how they look SO similar in Hebrew):

Incline (נָטָה – natah) means to stretch, bend, or lean in with intentionality. It’s not passive listening; it’s a posture of eager attention, like cupping your hand to your ear so you don’t miss a single word.

Apply (נָטַן – natan) means to turn your heart toward something, to set it in a certain direction. Applying your heart isn’t accidental—it’s a deliberate choice to align your inner life with God’s truth.

By adding them together, the writer shows us that wisdom requires both careful listening and intentional action.

This chapter of Proverbs certainly builds its case with conditions and promises!

If you incline your ear…
If you apply your heart…
If you cry after knowledge and lift your voice for understanding…
If you seek her as silver and search as for hidden treasure…

Then -  “shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.” (v5)

It’s almost like a treasure hunt with clear instructions: keep leaning in, keep applying, keep seeking, and the reward is not just information - it’s a relationship with God Himself.

So, what does Proverbs 2 tell us about what happens when we treasure God’s wisdom?

• Protection – Wisdom preserves and keeps us from walking in harmful ways. (v11)
• Discernment – Wisdom helps us recognize what’s right and turn away from deceitful voices. (v12)
• Direction – Wisdom leads us into paths of righteousness, not destruction. (v20) God’s wisdom is not just about gaining knowledge; it’s about walking securely in a world full of traps.

- Word Study -
“Understanding” (בִּינָה – binah). The Hebrew word binah means discernment, insight, the ability to distinguish between things. It’s not just book smarts; it’s a Spirit-led awareness that cuts through the fog of confusion. When God grants us binah, we can see past the surface of things.......recognizing lies, choosing truth, and staying on the path of life.

- Write with me -
What “treasures” are you most often tempted to chase after in life?

How can you incline your ear and apply your heart to wisdom this week?

Where do you most need discernment right now?

- Pray with me -
Lord, help me not only to listen, but to lean in with eagerness. Teach me to apply my heart fully to Your wisdom. As I cry out and seek You like hidden treasure, let me find the fear of the Lord and the knowledge of God. Be a hedge about me that protects me from deception and leads me in paths of righteousness. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
