Grace in the Chaos
Have you ever felt like the world is spinning too fast and you’re just trying to hold on?
That’s how I felt as I sat with 1 Thessalonians 5.
Paul begins this chapter like someone shaking your shoulders gently in the early morning:
But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you... For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. - 1 Thessalonians 5:1–2
The “day of the Lord” is coming! Paul says we won’t get a calendar notification or a countdown. But instead of feeding fear, Paul encourages peace “But ye, brethren, are not in darkness.”
Let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. - v8
This sounds like battle language, doesn't it? It's not swords and shields that protect us, it's faith, love, and hope. That armor reminds us that spiritual alertness is not about fear...it's about being clothed in Christ.
It's easy to walk out the door spiritually exposed, heart unguarded, mind unprotected.
This verse reminded me that hope is a helmet, love is a shield, and faith is our defense against the lies of darkness.
Every day is a battlefield! And God has already handed us the gear!
Know them which labour among you... Esteem them very highly in love... be at peace among yourselves. - v12-13
Paul instructs us to love and honor our leaders, live at peace, and look out for one another. He doesn't say "ignore the weak" or "shame the fearful." Instead, he says:
-
Warn the unruly
-
Comfort the fainthearted
-
Support the weak
-
Be patient with everyone
Patience is thin and criticism is thick in this crazy world. Paul invites us to be the kind of person who creates peace in the lives of others.
Then come the tiny, powerful commands.... can I call them "spiritual espresso shots"? :)
-
“Rejoice evermore.”
-
“Pray without ceasing.”
-
“In everything give thanks…”
-
“Quench not the Spirit.”
-
“Despise not prophesyings.”
-
“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”
-
“Abstain from all appearance of evil.”
It’s as if Paul was giving us daily fuel for this journey.
Rejoice.Stay prayerful.Stay thankful.Be discerning.Stay open to God’s voice.Choose what’s good.
And just when I started feeling a bit overwhelmed by these spiritual goals, I see this....
Check out THIS promise....
Did you catch that?
God Himself will do it.
The pressure to perform, to get it all right, to stay perfectly “awake” all the time....that’s not from Him. Yes, we’re called to live alert and holy lives. But the power? The transformation? The faithfulness?
That’s God’s job.
We just keep showing up. He does the sanctifying.
If you feel weary, foggy, or uncertain, this chapter is for you.
You are not in darkness.
You are not alone.
You are not forgotten.
You are loved, called, and covered by the God who promises:
Faithful is He who calls you.....He will do it.
