Not Easily Broken: Guarding Unity in the Quiet Battles

And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly
broken. - Ecclesiastes 4:12

In every church, there’s a battleground we don’t always see with our eyes. It’s not always just stress or personality clashes. Sometimes, it’s spiritual warfare in disguise.

The enemy knows something about church leadership that we sometimes forget:

a unified team is a powerful threat to darkness.

And that’s exactly why he tries to sneak in and divide!

Satan doesn’t usually start with a bullhorn...he starts with a whisper.

“They don’t really value what you bring.”
“Did you see how she looked at you?”
“Why didn’t they include you in that decision?”
“You’d be better off doing this your own way.”
"The don't take anything you say seriously."

Sometimes....there’s not even an offense!
No blowup.
No actual infraction.
Just a whisper.
A seed of doubt.
A feeling that lingers.
Or a narrative that starts forming in your mind .... even if no one said a word.

The enemy doesn’t need facts - he only needs your attention.

He doesn’t have to destroy - just divide.
And often, he does it through offense, pride, assumptions, comparison - or even nothing at all but imagination.

He knows that if he can isolate one part of the leadership team, he can weaken the whole!

But Ecclesiastes 4:12 reminds us of something eternal and strategic.....

“...a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

Unity is not just nice - it’s necessary.
It’s not just helpful - it’s heaven’s design for endurance.

A “threefold cord” implies not just multiple people - but God’s presence intertwined in those relationships.

It’s not just people agreeing on a mission.

It’s people submitted to God, united in Spirit, and strengthened by grace.

And if we’re being honest, we know that the pull to disconnect, to guard our hearts, or to shut down is VERY real.

But the stronger the pull, the more intentional we must be to stay braided together in humility, truth, and grace.

Here are 3 ways you can guard against division:
  • Pray for each other, not about each other.
    • Let prayer be the bridge when words fall short.
  • Talk it out, not walk it out.
    • DO NOT let silence become distance. This one is MY biggest struggle - the very trap the enemy uses when he wants to sneak in and plant division.  I can tell when "division" is attacking because I am determined to keep everything to myself and not confide or ask for prayer.
    • Clarify. Forgive. Reconnect.
  • Remember the mission is bigger than the moment.
    • Temporary offense is never worth long-term damage.
If you’re part of a leadership team.....ESPECIALLY IN THE CHURCH - know this:

Your unity is anointed.
Your connection is a calling.
And your strength, when braided together
with the Spirit of God, can withstand any storm.

So the next time the enemy tries to sneak in through a side glance, a stressful season, a silence, or even a thought that spirals out of nowhere... pause and remember:

“A threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

And neither are we.
