Lessons from the Creek
Do you ever just sit still?
How about long enough to really hear what’s happening around you?
Not the noise of the world, not the endless demands calling your name... but the deeper things.
The things that don't shout for attention but whisper if you're willing to listen.
Last night, I sat by our creek in the backyard. The water was moving slow and steady... just flowing, like it knew exactly where it was going. There were a few birds above me, just chirping away, jumping from branch to branch. As I sat there, taking it all in, I wondered for a moment... not in doubt, but in awe...do the birds even notice me?
I wondered if their little chirps were their way of letting others know I was there below. Perhaps in their own language, they were observing me just as I was observing them. It made me think ...how we sometimes forget to notice the beauty that’s quietly speaking all around us.
Isn’t it incredible how creation doesn’t need to announce its worship, it simply just does what it was made to do? The birds don’t hesitate to sing. The water doesn’t second-guess its path. Creation doesn’t question its purpose - it knows who it is and why it exists.
And here I am, made from the same heart that created those things, pausing long enough to hear the song. In these quiet moments, it’s as if everything (the birds, the creek, the trees) is reminding me that I, too, was made for this.
To notice. To respond. To praise.
"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork."
We were created to praise. And not just in the loud moments, not just in the grand gestures, but in the stillness...in the quietness. We were made to worship in the everyday. To find God in the simple things. To let His presence wash over us like the creek, steady and unhurried, filling every part of our hearts.
So, I encourage you....take a moment. Step outside, find a place of stillness, and listen. Let the world around you remind you that you, too, were created for this. You were made to worship, not just in grand acts, but in the quiet, in the simple, and in the stillness where God’s glory is being declared all around you. Because it's in those moments, that His "still small voice" grabs ahold of the heart and shapes it, steadies it, and draws it closer to Him
Don't rush past the stillness. Wait on Him and meet Him there.
